When life gives you challenges, sometimes you have to get creative. More often than not, hair tends to give us a lot more trouble than we bargain for. Whether it be chronic dryness, damage, frizz, or scalp flakiness, hair can get messy. Some causes are out of our control, such as weather, but some may be the very things that we use to try to help, such as hair tools that use heat. There are solutions, whether they are short term or long term, which may require you to think outside of the box.

Hair masks are one of the best solutions to fix a bad hair day. Hair masks are deep conditioning treatments that help to heal or remedy damaged hair. However, for those who don’t want to go through ordering online or going to a physical store, there surprisingly are other options. Have you ever considered using at home remedies for hair? You’ll be happy to know that there are an assortment of do-it-yourself options for hair masks that work to target specific problems, all while giving your hair great conditioning at the same time.

Dry Hair

Dry hair can be one of the worst things that can happen, appearance-wise. It can leave your hair looking dull, brittle, or rough. Luckily, there is an at home remedy that can help for all hair types and ingredients can be found right in your refrigerator! This particular DIY mask consists of honey, egg, and apple cider vinegar. This combination is great for hydration and gives off a nourishing and shiny new look. By combining all of these ingredients into a bowl and leaving it on your hair for 30-40 minutes before rinsing, you can begin to see results!

Ingredients:

  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

Flakes

Flakes can ruin a little black dress moment. They can be caused by anything from having dandruff, or even your house being too hot! Heated air may have a drying effect on your skin and can lead to a dry scalp or flaking. Would you ever guess that one ingredient in a hair mask to help treat this would be sugar? That’s right, sugar! Not only that, but coconut oil and essential oil are involved in this DIY mask. Mix these ingredients together, and when you’re in the shower, apply it to small sections of damp hair. Massage, and then clip the hair up. Afterwards, you can rest easy knowing that this particular mix is great for dissolving dead skin cells and promoting circulation to the scalp.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of raw and unrefined coconut oil
  • 4 teaspoons of raw sugar
  • 5 drops of peppermint oil
  • 2 drops of tea tree oil

Irritated Scalp

Whether it be from dryness or other causes, an irritated scalp is not a fun experience. Itchiness and redness can become an issue, and left untreated, can get worse as time goes on. You’ll be happy to hear that there is a hair mask to help combat this containing a key ingredient: green tea. Green tea has been shown to have a plethora of health benefits, and now one more can be added to the list. Its antioxidants and nutrients help calm anything irritated as it works to “balance out” an irritated and enflamed scalp. When used with peppermint oil and apple cider vinegar, it works as an excellent at home mask. Massaging it into your scalp and letting it sit for five minutes before rinsing can give you some much needed relief.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of green tea
  • 2 drops of peppermint oil
  • 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar

Hair Damage

Yes, there is a recipe for hair damage, possibly one of the worst hair issues one can have. Damaged hair can be caused by anything from styling tools to hair dye to even the weather or temperature outside. It can cause an assortment of issues such as split ends, dryness, tangling, or even hair loss! This next hair mask is filled with fatty acids and antioxidants to help get your locks back on track. A mix of avocado, egg, honey, and olive oil can help get you there and make your hair better than ever. Apply this mix to wet hair, then wrap it into a bun and cover it with something, such as a shower cap. After blow drying your covered hair for 10 minutes and letting it sit for 20, rinse and wash it out. The results of this mix will strengthen and moisturize hair, while also improving the overall look by making it shine more!

Ingredients:

  • ½ of avocado
  • 1 egg
