Do you enjoy experimenting with hair color or are you simply looking to save some money and dye your hair at home? Dyeing your hair can cause major damage to it unless it is done properly, so here are some tips to help you get the color you want!

1. Determine Your Own Natural Shade

You natural hair color should determine where to start when choosing your desired shade. For instance, if you have a warmer base tone you will be able to take on different colors and shades than someone who has a cooler base tone. Consult your hair dresser regarding what dyes and shades will suit you best.

2. Try on a Wig Beforehand

Trying on a wig beforehand can be a good way to test the color you are looking to switch to before completely committing to it. Then, when you completely commit and dye you hair in that color, there will be no unpleasant surprises.

3. Be a Realist

Some of us may want to change our hair drastically, such as going from a dark brown hair color to blonde. These kinds of changes cannot be achieved overnight. This is because the more drastic the change the more likely you are to get undesired results and hair damage. Therefore, start out with subtle shifts in hair color that are more achievable.

4. Buy More Dye than You Need

It is always a good idea to buy more dye than you think you will need. This is because one of the worst things that can happen to you as you’re in the middle of dyeing your hair is running out of dye. If you have fairly thick hair that’s below the shoulder you may need as many as three boxes of dye. So stock up!

5. Stay Away From the Pool

The pool can be a dangerous place before a hair dye. Swimming pools contain chlorine that strips away the hair cuticle. This allows the minerals in the water get into your shaft and alter your hair color. If you want to preserve your color, a good rule of thumb is to stay away from the pool 1-2 weeks before and after dyeing your hair.

6. Don’t Shower 24/48 Hours Before Dyeing Your Hair

The scalp’s natural oils act as a buffer that prevents irritation from occurring after you have dyed your hair. Also, second day hair helps with the color distribution in addition to helping the color settle better on the hair. So skip the shower the day before dying your hair at home!

7. Cover Anything that You Don’t Want to Ruin

If you get dye on any type of fabric it is practically impossible to get it off.  Therefore, protect anything that you don’t want to get ruined. For instance, cover the floor around where you are planning to dye your hair with newspaper and wear a shirt that you don’t mind ruining.
