All hair lengths are not created equal. Hair length can be anywhere from Crystal Gayle long to Sinead O’Connor shaved … and anywhere in between!

People really love to throw around the phrase “wash and go” hair, and it is almost always in relation to short hair. The truth is that even short hair comes in countless lengths, textures, and styles.

If you have short hair, it might be easier to maintain, but you still need to know the proper techniques for washing, drying and styling short hair. Knowing this can ensure that you always look fabulous and that your hair is properly taken care of and healthy.

Follow these steps to help maintain a great look with short hair:

Your scalp may be more noticeable with short hair, so first you should identify what kind of scalp you have as well as what kind of shampoo and conditioner are best suited to your hair.

If you have an oily scalp, you may need to wash your hair more often and stay away from moisturizing or hydrating products. Find products that are specifically designed for an oily scalp and use them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

On the flipside, if you have a dry or itchy scalp, you’ll want to look for products that contain extra moisture, or maybe even dandruff-eliminating shampoo and a good deep conditioner. It is important not to overwash your hair when you have a dry scalp or dry hair.

Make sure to rinse your hair with cool water or at the very least, slightly warm. Using cooler water is supposed to seal the cuticle.

You’ll only need a very small amount of shampoo and can usually get away with washing it only once per shower. Focus on washing the roots of your hair to avoid damage and over-drying.

Don’t forget the conditioner. Conditioner is important, but if your scalp tends to be oily, focus on the ends of your hair only and avoid your scalp. You can use a wide tooth comb to apply conditioner and distribute it evenly through hair that is very short.

Gently pat your hair dry if you plan to air dry. Or if you blow dry your hair, make sure to use a heat protectant product first.

If you have curly hair, you may want to try using a diffuser attachment with your hair dryer. Curly hair needs to be loaded with product while it is freshly washed and super wet. You can choose to finger style it and let it air dry, or allow the product to cure on your hair and then use a diffuser to complete your style.

If you have wavy or straight hair, you can blow dry using a brush to straighten out your hair. Be sure to use the right styling product that is designed to produce the style you want to achieve.

There are literally thousands and thousands of styling products to choose from. You can pick different hair products depending on the desired outcome of your hair. If you’d like a curly or wavy style, try a mousse or cream and be sure to apply it when your hair is soaking wet.

If you’d like a style that stays put in even the windiest of weather, try a wax, styling putty, or hairspray. Be certain to warm up the styling wax in your hands by rubbing it together like Mr. Miyagi before applying it to your style.

Let’s say you want shiny and straight hair like Mila Kunis or Jennifer Anniston, try a serum or shine spray in conjunction with a high-quality straightening iron.

Or perhaps you need more texture. Look for a texturizing spray and move your hair where you want it as you spray your hair in stages while you style.

Short hair can have limitations when it comes to style, so you may need to get a bit creative to change your look. You can always add barrettes, scarves, a splash of color, or headbands for a more exciting look.

Short hair can be completely liberating. It reduces the amount of hair product you need and the amount of time spent blow drying, curling, and styling. There is no time like the present to give short hair a try.

when I scratch my head, I get white stuff in my nails. I have short hair and ado not blow dry . I only use your hairspray . and very little of it. I shampoo 2 times a week. My hair is starting to fall out when I put my hands thru it.
I am 77 years old. What is the white stuff in my nails? is that from conditioner or what??

I’ve been using this for 2 months now according to the directions and my hair is coming out by the handfuls! I am now having to cut it short because it is completely see thru even on the bottom! The only reason I am still using it is because they said it is normal to lose the old hair before the new comes in. I’m giving it 2 more months and praying that I’m not completely bald when that time is up! I seem to have some new hair on the fringe of my hair but nothing on the top.
