I’ll admit it – I’m not really a morning person.
So I’ve been known to slap the snooze button as many as five times before actually dragging myself out of bed.
And while I appreciate the extra sleep, I don’t appreciate it what it does for the time I have to get ready.
Which is why there are at least two or three days a week that I wind up wearing a basic ponytail instead of a more complicated ‘do.
That’s because a pony barely takes any time to pull together and gives you a pretty polished look without much fuss.
But when you wear them as often as I do, a simple ponytail can definitely get a little boring.
The next time you’re strapped for time and find yourself contemplating a basic pony, you don’t have to wind up with a tired, old style. By putting a new twist on the same old pony, you can look chic enough for school, the office, brunch with friends or even an evening out with these ideas to transform the style.
Super Sleek Pony
Going for a sleek, modern look is probably the easiest way to take your usual pony game up a notch. Start with damp hair and work a smoothing serum like a TRESemme Keratin Smooth Infusing Smoothing Serum through from root to ends. Use a round brush to blow dry hair, taking care to get your locks as smooth as possible. Once your hair is dry, spray it with a light hairspray like the Toni & Guy Casual Flexible Hold Hair Spray to give hair a little more hold. Use a brush to smooth hair back into a ponytail – you can keep it low at the nape of your neck or go higher if you prefer – and use an elastic that matches your hair color to secure it.
To really get a sleek look, though, take a strand from the side of the pony and wrap it around the base to hide the elastic, pinning it in place with a bobby pin.
Bubble Pony
For a playful, flirty look, a bubble or tiered pony can definitely do the trick – and it’s quick and easy so you can do it even if you’re in a hurry. Pull your hair back into a basic pony, placing it wherever you like on the back of your head and securing it with an elastic as you normally would. Then grab another elastic and place it approximately 3- to 4-inches down the pony. Continue going down the tail with elastics until you run out of hair. Once the entire ponytail is separated into sections with the elastics, go back and use your fingers to fluff each individual section for added volume – and to create a bubble-like effect. To make sure your pony stays intact all day, give it a spritz with a medium hold hairspray like the Aveda Brilliant Medium Hold Hair Spray.
Twisted Pony
If you want a more romantic take on the basic pony for your next date night, go for a twisted side style. Gather your hair to one side of the head, depending on where you want the pony. Secure all of your hair except for one section that’s just a couple of inches away from the ear on the side opposite the ponytail. Grab the small section and twist it tightly to prevent any pieces from coming loose. Pull the twisted piece across the back of your head and wrap it around the base of the pony, using several bobby pins to secure it in place. Spray the pony with a shine-enhancing hairspray like the Oribe Shine Light Reflecting Spray to keep the twist in place all night long.
