We think so much about our hair — thicker hair! flat iron! fancy products! — that we sometimes lose sight of the good ol’ basics when it comes to caring for our tresses.

Let’s have a little refresher, shall we?

Shampoo:

You might realize you haven’t been shampooing the best way possible. First, to minimize breakage, ensure that your hair is fully wet before shampooing. Do not use more than a quarter-size amount of shampoo and lather it in your palms. Massage it into your hair and leave it in for no more than 30 seconds. Rinse with cool water to seal in the moisture.

Once you get out of the shower and are ready to COMB through it (do not use a brush with wet hair – it causes breakage!), flip your head upside down and comb from the scalp to ends to distribute natural oils.

Drying:

When you are getting ready to dry your hair, towel dry as best you can to avoid damaging your hair with heat – plus, this saves time! After you are ready to go, you can dampen your hair brush to cut down on static electricity before brushing. If you are putting your hair in a ponytail or braid, make sure to use a coated rubber band to reduce stress on the hair.

Fix damaged hair:

Sometimes you may feel as though your hair is too damaged for repair; I certainly have. I mean, you color it, you blow dry it, you try your best to get those trims to keep it healthy … But occasionally you are still left with damaged hair. Try this home remedy once a week for a month and watch your hair transform back!

All you need for this homemade fix is oil and an egg. First of all, massage oil into your hair. Then, beat the yolk of one egg and massage that into your hair, working from the ends up. Leave it in place for 10 minutes then shampoo as usual – you will be thrilled with the gleaming results!
