Hair loss can be a very challenging obstacle to overcome. We often listen to the old tales from our childhood about what causes hair loss and how to cure it. Most of the things women hear about hair loss aren’t exactly the truth. Some of these hair loss myths might open your eyes to what you thought you knew about your hair.

Myth: Regular trims make your grow quicker.

Truth: Cutting your hair will not make it grow back faster. It may seem like it if you’ve had split ends, or damaged hair. Your hair grows from the root; cutting off split ends will make your hair appear healthier i.e. thicker, as it is growing back.

Myth: Standing on your head will stimulate blood flow, causing more hair to grow.

Truth: All the blood will rush to your head but that will not make your hair growth any quicker, or appear fuller than it already is. You’ll just look silly and be left with a headache.

Myth: Hair loss comes from your mother’s side of the family

Truth: Although some hair loss is hereditary it can come from either parent’s side.

Myth: Hats and hair accessories contribute to your hair loss.

Truth: This isn’t entirely false. If you wear a hat every day, just make sure it’s clean. Dirty hats can lead to scalp irritation which can lead to eventual hair loss. But if you wear a clean hat everyday that allows your scalp to breathe it won’t have any effect on your hair.

Myth: Brushing 100 times a day will make hair stronger and healthier.

Truth: This misconception comes from women thinking that the continuous brushing will help distribute the oil from the scalp to the rest of the hair, ultimately resulting in a healthier scalp and healthier hair. Brushing 100 times a day is not necessary. This will only put stress on your hair follicles and possibly result in more damage. While brushing isn’t entirely bad, but 100 times a day is way too much. Try using a wide tooth comb, or a brush with ball point bristles.

Myth: The more your shampoo suds up, the cleaner and healthier your scalp is.

Truth: This is absolutely false. Shampoos that foam up and lather include sulfates. Sulfates are harsh chemicals that remove dirt and build up, but they also strip your hair and scalp of its natural oils. Shampooing often with products that include sulfates can lead to dry scalp and dry hair, resulting in hair loss and damage. Try switching to sulfate free products like Keranique Scalp Stimulating Shampoo. It’s gentle, and helps repair thinning hair.
