As a woman, experiencing thinning hair and/or hair loss can be devastating. After all, our hair can be as much a part of our identities as our first names. As a child, I definitely thought only men lose their hair but that is obviously not true. Let’s talk about some reasons women might lose their hair.
Genetics – Genetic hair loss is called androgenetic alopecia. This is the most common type of hair loss in women and men. It usually beings in your 20s with thinning hair at the crown of the head or around the hairline. I’ve heard that baldness skips a generation but that’s not necessarily the case. Having one or more parents with hair loss increases your risk of experiencing it as well.
Stress and other life changes – Any dramatic change in your lifestyle can cause thinning hair or hair loss. Extreme stress, hormone changes (it is VERY common for women who recently gave birth to experience hair loss because of the change in hormones), chemotherapy, drastic weight loss, major surgeries and more can all contribute to this condition called telogen effluvium.
Nutritional deficiencies – Lack of iron or Vitamin D can contribute to hair loss. Women with heavy periods might experience hair loss from iron deficiency while women with lack of sun exposure might notice hair loss from Vitamin D deficiency. Eat tons of vegetables and fruits of varying colors to ensure you get a ton of vitamins and nutrients, as well as healthy grains like quinoa. A multivitamin is a great addition to a balanced diet for an added boost.
Diseases and other conditions – Diabetes, thyroid disease, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) , Lupus, Alopecia Areata (where the immune system attacks hair follicles), Traction Alopecia (women who wear tight braids, ponytails, and weaves can experience hair loss around the hairline) and more can contribute to your hair loss. See a physician if you are concerned this might be the case.
Styling – Overstyling can contribute. January Jones recently admitted she is experiencing hair loss from coloring her hair too often. Perms, relaxers, hair dye and other chemicals can cause hair loss, and so can washing and styling too much. Use heat products like curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons? They all do damage to your hair. If you must use heat on your hair, we recommend using a heat protectant first!
