Are you looking for new hairstyles to add to your repertoire, but are unsure where to start? The half-up, half-down hairstyle is versatile and can be adjusted for many occasions and hair types. We’ve collected a few ideas for women to add some life to their hair with a few quick adjustments.
Managing a Half-Up, Half-Down Style
Sometimes you want both the neatness and easiness of an updo hairstyle, but also want the smoothness and personality of a styled down method. With a half-up half-down, you can easily achieve both, still making it look as elegant and unique as the person wearing it! Before you start styling a half-up half-down, you do need to know a few ways to take care of it:
- Your hair must be fully blow-dried before you start styling it.
- Section your hair off into separate sections. You are going to want to know exactly what parts of your hair you are working with, and which way you are styling which section.
- The back section of your hair should almost always be up in a bun, tight braid, or ponytail, with the rest of it flowing free.
These hairstyles look great for a formal event or a photo shoot but can also be worn beautifully for an everyday outing!
Examples of Hairstyles
- Twisted Half-Up Ponytail: A beautiful, intricate look that is great for family events, this hairstyle can be found on many celebrities and influential people, but now it is your time to have some of that fire. For this look, you are going to want to add some subtle waves into your hair via a hair wand. After adding some styling oil to your hair, you are going to then begin creating small twists in your hair by tying rolled sections of hair from both sides of your head into one, sinching it with a hair-tie, preferably one in a color that blends in with your natural color.
- Simple Half-Up Ponytail: This is an easy one and has been beloved for a very long time. Simply bunch up all your hair towards the back of your head (more in between the back and top of your head) and secure up with a hair tie, twisting the tie two or three times to ensure the tightest sinch of the pony. Then let the tail flow naturally down from the back and voila!
- Side Braid: A unique spin on a French braid, this style will be turning heads at any event you attend sporting it. To begin, you must create a large side part in your hair, creating two separate sections of your hair. Let the heavier side of this part flow slightly freer than the lighter one, then use the lighter one to create the braid. While not the most traditional half-up half-down ‘do, it will certainly be the most unique one in the room.
- Double French Braids: A very elegant style that can be worn in almost any occasion, formal or informal, these braids are sure to be getting compliments as you walk by. The process is slightly lengthier than other styles, however. To begin, you divide the hair down the center of your head using a comb. Take one these parts and tie it, keeping it separated. Now with the other parted side, separate a ½ inch portion into 3 sections (left, middle, right). Now weave the left over the middle, then the right over the middle, and repeat until you reach the end of your hair. Using an elastic band to tie off the bottom of this strand, move on to the next part and continue the process until this one is also completed. You now have very well-done French braids!
It may initially be tough to decide on what style of hair you want to present to the world, with hundreds of styles for both hair-up or hair-down. If you want to meet in the middle and sport a half-up half-down style, there are many to choose from that are simple and attractive to the eye!
