We all have different hair types and textures. Naturally, we all need to follow different hair care routines for our specific hair type. However, there are some very common mistakes that a lot of people make when caring for their hair. Learn what they are so you can avoid doing them in the future!
First, many people might use too many hair products on a daily basis. If you have noticed that your hair seems dry, dull, lifeless, or greasy and unmanageable, this could be the cause. When it comes to products, generally less is more. In addition, you might actually be washing your hair too often! Unless your hair is very oily and greasy, you likely do not need to wash your hair every day. Aim to wash and condition your hair a few times per week. Use products sparingly.
If you think you don’t need to use conditioner, think again. All hair types can benefit from a regular conditioner and a deep conditioner at least once a month. This is especially true if you have coarse, thick, or dry hair. Look for a conditioner that is made specifically for your hair type.
When you shower, do you rinse your hair enough? If you are in a rush and don’t rinse your hair thoroughly, shampoo and conditioner may not completely rinse out of your hair. This can cause a tacky feeling and could even cause itchiness and other scalp conditions. Take your time and rinse your hair completely. It is also great to finish by rinsing with cold water to seal your hair cuticle. This can also help you to have shiny and smooth hair.
Another mistake is that you might not be trimming your hair enough. Even if you are growing out your hair, you will want to get regular trims. Every six weeks or so is a great timeline to help keep your hair damage-free.
Make sure you are using a heat protectant when you use a hair dryer, curling iron, straightener, or another hot tool on your hair. If you are not, you are likely damaging your hair which may lead to split ends, frizz, and other unwanted hair concerns. It is also great to end your hair drying session with a shot of cool air, which most hair dryers offer these days.
Lastly, you may notice that your hair doesn’t cooperate or look as nice when you eat unhealthy foods. If you are neglecting your diet, you are neglecting your hair as well. Make sure to eat a balanced diet full of protein and stay hydrated. This can help your hair look and feel its best!
