You may remember learning about pH levels in school. But, did you realize that your hair has a pH level? Your hair’s pH level actually says a lot about your hair’s health and the look and feel of your hair. Here are the basics: there is a pH scale that goes from zero to 14. Zero is the most acidic, while fourteen is the most alkaline. 7 is neutral, right in the middle.
Your hair naturally has a pH level of around 4.5 to 5.5. However, your hair’s pH balance can be disrupted, which can affect the look and feel of your hair. Certain things that can throw off your hair’s pH balance are coloring your hair, bleaching it, and even shampooing if you are using a cheap shampoo.
So, what actually happens? Your hair’s cuticle, which is the outer layer, starts to become damaged and weak. This can lead to breakage, frizz, and even dandruff. Luckily, if you balance your hair’s pH, it will often go back to normal and look and feel healthier.
Make sure you are using a high-quality shampoo and conditioner. Generally, when your hair’s pH balance gets out of whack, it is because you are using products that are too alkaline. You need more acidity to restore the hair’s natural balance. If your hair is very damaged, you may also want to try an apple cider vinegar rinse on your hair or use a deep conditioning mask. Apple cider vinegar is naturally very acidic and can help your hair. It can also create a nice shine.
