When you go outdoors in the hot, sunny weather, you might remember to put on sunscreen. However, there is one area that you probably always forget: your scalp! Even if you have a full head of hair, your tender scalp can still get burned. Here’s what to do if you get a sunburn on your scalp:
First things first, you need to get more moisture to the area. When you wash your hair, be gentle. Wash with cool or lukewarm water and use an alcohol-free shampoo. You need to use a gentle shampoo and avoid irritating the area. Products with alcohol will make it worse.
A natural way to help heal the itch and the burn is to rinse with apple cider vinegar. If you don’t like the smell, simply shampoo after you rinse.
Feel free to apply a generous amount of aloe vera gel right on your scalp before bedtime. If you don’t want to get the aloe vera gel on your pillow, go to sleep in a shower cap or use a towel or scarf to wrap around your head.
For the time being, avoid any hot tools, sprays, and other hair products near your scalp. Let the area heal until you touch it or put anything near it. Also, avoid itching or touching the area as it can make it worse. If your scalp is starting to peel, just leave it be and wrap a scarf around your head to hide the flakes for the time being.
Now you know, your scalp also needs sunscreen! It can be hard to apply if you have lots of hair, so try a sunscreen spray made specifically for your hair. You can also avoid burning that area of your head by wearing a hat or scarf.
If you have a severe burn with blistering and/or pain, see a doctor. They may need to prescribe you a stronger medicated cream to help it heal.
