Oh, Great. The weather person just ruined your morning by uttering that five letter word you hate to hear every time it rolls off of her tongue. Humid.
When the weather calls for humidity, frizzy hair is surely going to plague your day. While it is challenging to maintain a scrumptious hairstyle in humid weather, it is definitely doable. Next time the forecast calls for humid temperatures, don’t reach for your baseball cap. Instead, use a combination of products and techniques to keep the humidity from turning your hair into a hot, frizzy mess.
Use a smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Ironically, when hair is dry, it is more prone to frizzing on high humidity days. Smoothing shampoo and conditioners that contain keratin work well for adding moisture to the hair, and protecting it from humidity. After you shampoo your hair, apply a sensible amount of smoothing conditioner throughout your hair. Leave the conditioner in your hair for between 5 and 10 minutes before rinsing it out with warm water. If you rinse the conditioner out too soon, you will cheat your hair out of the moisturizing benefits it can provide. Ideally, you should only wash your hair every two to three days to avoid stripping it of its natural oils. These oils are key to helping combat dryness, and protecting the hair from frizz.
Apply a styling mousse. Mousse is ideal for adding extra volume and shine to your hair. This foamy product also gives your hair an extra layer of protection from frizz-causing humidity. Apply the mousse to your hair while it is slightly damp. If you have natural curls or waves, and you want definition that lasts, wrap each curl around your finger to add depth. Because mousse is lighter than hair gel, it is easy to get carried away with its application. Remember though, less is more. Only use the amount that’s necessary to get the job done. Most products offer recommendations via the instructions as to how much product is appropriate to use.
Use a heat protectant spray. As long as your hair is not dry and brittle, styling it with heat can fight frizz. If you intend to use heat to style your hair, protect it with a heat protectant spray. A heat protectant product not only shields your hair from heat damage, it seals the hair to keep excess moisture out and natural oils in. For the best results, take one to two-inch sections of the hair and smooth it from the ends to the shaft with a flat iron. Continue this process until you have finished all of your hair. Only use the heat on your hair when absolutely necessary. Overdoing the heat can contribute to dryness, brittleness and breakage.
Apply a little smoothing serum. A high quality, smoothing serum is the perfect way to finish your style while helping to seal the hair from unwanted moisture intrusion. A little dab will do. Simply put a dime-sized drop (a little more for longer hair) into the palm of your hand, and work it through your finished style.
Cover it with a hair mask. Just as the skin needs a way to bounce back from daily stresses, so does your hair. Every two weeks, use a deep conditioning, hair mask to revitalize your hair, and help it recover from the stress of styling products and daily manipulation.
Humid conditions are not ideal when you want to keep your hair style intact. While there is nothing you can do to change the weather, there are things you can do to maintain your tresses. Smoothing serums, heat protectant sprays, straightening shampoos, mousses and bi-weekly hair masks can all keep humidity-prompted frizz from destroying your do.
