When your hair looks great — especially if you took the time to blow it out or paid a stylist to do it for you — it can be really tough to motivate to work out. Sweat and ponytails can destroy the perfect style. . . but you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your health for yhour hair!
These are our favorite tips for keeping your hair looking perfect while working out.
Dry shampoo is your friend
The oil and grease at your roots is not bad for your hair, but we still feel compelled to get rid of it with shampoo because it’s just not attractive. If your locks look greasy after a workout, spritz the roots with dry shampoo to cover them up.
This is one of the best ways to save your blowout, since it will absorb sweat and oil. Spray it on before you start sweating for best results – this way, the sweat on your scalp won’t spread down the shafts of your hair. While allowing you to keep up with your gym routine, this is also one of the healthiest tricks for your hair. Instead of stripping the oils away like wet shampoo, dry shampoo simply reduces their appearance – they are still nourishing your strands.
Redefine the line
Besides sweat, one surefire way your workout can ruin your blowout is through that annoying bend your elastic creates when holding hair in a ponytail. No matter which hair tie you use, this is bound to happen, but there are ways to pull your hair up during your workout that won’t leave that dreaded line.
Flip your head upside down and divide your hair into two sections, parted down the middle. Then, twist the sections around each other and wrap into a bun on the top of your head, securing all the way around with bobby pins. When you pin it right, this ‘do will last even the most vigorous workouts, while letting the sweat evaporate through the hair instead of into a certain style (like the ponytail or braid).
Plus, when you take it out, you might just find you love the waves it created!
Do you heart your headband?
Even if all of your hair is long enough to fit into a ponytail (or the aforementioned topknot) you might want to slap on a headband to keep moisture away from your hair.
Almost everyone sweats on their forehead and neck, so the trick is to keep hair as far away from these places as possible to maintain your smooth tresses. If you pick an absorbent one, it can even soak in the sweat from your face and neck before it reaches your hair. Make sure it’s not too tight, though, to avoid making any lines or dents in your hair.
Of course, you might need to touch up your style with a blowdryer, curling iron or straightener before you wear the blowout for another day, but these tricks should keep your hair and body healthy!
