Oh, store shelves. When I see all the hair products all the amazing things they claim to do — fight frizz! add shine! tame curls! — I hope this one will finally be THE one, and I hand over my credit card.
And while some products definitely deliver on their packaging’s promises, others leave me scratching my head wondering why I’m willing to shell out my hard earned money for something that makes no difference in my hair’s appearance – and contains a list of ingredients that I can’t even pronounce!
And then I stop to think about how many items my refrigerator and pantry can actually help with some of the most common hair problems. The trick is knowing which items – or combo of items – to use for what hair issue. So if you like the idea of saving a little money and using natural products, here are some home remedies that you can whip in a hurry any time your hair needs a little extra TLC.
Frizzy Hair
If you’re struggling with frizz, your hair needs a little extra moisture. Grab the jar of mayonnaise from fridge and mix it with an egg and some olive oil to create a super hydrating mask. Apply it to your hair and wrap your head in a towel to generate enough heat to help the mask really penetrate the hair shaft. Leave the mask on for at least 15 to 30 minutes, and follow with your normal shampoo and conditioning routine for smooth, shiny hair. If your hair is super dry and frizzy, mash up some avocado and mix it in with the mayo, egg, and olive oil combo – the oils in the fruit hydrate the hair and smooth the cuticle to nip frizz in the bud.
Fine Hair
If you’ve got fine, limp hair like me, snag a bottle of your guy’s favorite beer from the fridge. The yeast, protein and vitamin B in beer can actually coat your strands to make them look fuller and shinier. And it’s super easy to use beer as a hair treatment – shampoo your hair as you normally would and after you’ve rinsed out the suds, pour a bottle of flat beer over your hair and massage it into the strands. Keep in mind that you may need less beer depending on the length of your hair. Rinse with cold water and follow with your usual conditioner.
Dull Hair
If you really want up your hair’s shine factor, grab a couple of lemons. The acids in lemon juice can actually help smooth your hair’s cuticle so it reflects light and looks super shiny. Juice a lemon and dilute it with two cups of water. Shampoo as normal and pour the lemon juice mixture over your hair. You can let it soak in for a few minutes before rinsing with cool water and conditioning as normal.
