Each season has its own special result on my hair. In the winter, it’s dry and dull. In the summer humidity, my frizz is out of control.
The fall, however? THAT is my time to shine — literally!
Autumn is not only the perfect time to repair your locks, it’s also one of the best times to really enjoy your hair for what it is. Here are ways to make the best of this perfect hair season!
Repairing summer damage
Whether you spent your summer by the pool, beach or found yourself pulling your hair up and out of your face over the last three months, it might have suffered some serious damage.
Start by getting a new haircut this fall. Snipping off those really dead, split ends will help you gauge how much special treatment your tresses will need to recover from summer damage. Usually, investing in a good weekly deep conditioning treatment or switching to a super-hydrating shampoo and conditioner will help restore your hair’s natural shine that might have been stripped by harsh chlorine, salt and sun.
Enjoying the newfound smoothness
You may have spent the summer fighting frizz, but as the air gets cooler and dryer, you might find yourself less consumed by your haircare routine. This makes fall the ideal time to experiment with new haircuts and styles. It’s also a great opportunity to try a new color, since you don’t have to worry about the sun and chlorine damaging the hair and changing the hue. You can try letting it air dry without so much fear of frizz, or using hot rollers the morning after showering to add some volume in the front.
It’s also a good time to experiment with new products. Whether you want to try a volumizing regimen or are fighting a scalp woe like dandruff, fall is a good time to see results. Because the weather is stable, you’ll be able to see results when they occur.
Cutting your losses
If you feel like you lose more hair in the fall than any other time, you’re not alone. Usually, people lose the most hair during November and December, because this is the time when the majority of your hair is in the mature phase of its growth cycle. If your hair is thinning or you’re concerned about how much hair you’re losing, early fall might be a good time to use a hair regrowth kit or treatment system. Conditioning of the scalp makes it more likely to hang on to new hairs when they grow in, and keeping your scalp healthy and conditioned will make sure the hair stays nourished when it grows in.
Prepping for the winter
Everyone has their winter hair woe – a dry, dull mane, an itchy scalp – whatever yours is, take some preventative steps to lessen the impact of your hair problems.
Even if you didn’t do serious damage to your hair over the summer, fall is a good time to boost up the hydration to ensure it’s ready for any damage that may occur over the winter. If you are prone to dandruff in the winter, start using a shampoo or conditioner with tea tree oil now to counteract the flakes. Another good trick is to massage warm olive oil into your scalp, then let it sit for a half an hour before washing it out.
