Getting your hair styled at the salon can be time consuming and expensive. Therefore, trying methods to help it last longer can save you both time and money, while still looking glamorous! There are so many things we do in our day-to-day life that can contribute to those curls falling or that blowout frizzing out. Listed below are tips for different methods to keep newly styled hair lasting and looking fresh for longer.

Ways to help your styled hair last longer:

  1. Hairspray: Hairspray helps to hold hair in place. If you’ve had your hair styled it will last longer if you take efforts to keep it in place. Wind can often tousle hair, making it messy and ruining the hairstyle—especially one that has bangs. Hairspray can help to protect hair from the effects of the wind since it creates a stiffened layer on the hair and makes it more resilient to the uncontrollable weather.
  2. Hair bonnet: Wearing a silk or satin hair bonnet while you sleep can help protect your hairstyle from coming undone and becoming flattened from laying on it. Silk and satin are both soft materials with slip and do not pull on the hair as much as other more so rough fabrics tend to.
  3. Avoid tightly pulling it back: Pulling styled hair back can alter the look being that so much pressure is applied. If you need to pull your hair back, opt for loose fitting, gentle, scrunchies that are made of a soft and slippery fabric such as satin or silk.
  4. Not brushing it: When you brush your hair you not only detangle it, but also separate the hairs which can often contribute to static and frizz forming, leaving the hair looking poofy, especially if it is naturally curly or wavy. In order to avoid this, try to prevent knots from forming by not sleeping on it without a bonnet, while also gently finger combing the hair with clean hands if knotting does happen to occur.
  5. Avoid getting your hair wet: When hair becomes wet, either from washing it or from rain, this will remove the products left in the hair from the styling. This can also add moisture to the hair which can weigh it down and contribute to the style becoming undone. While this is obvious for salon styles that aren’t permanent, don’t forget to avoid washing after receiving a perm, a chemical straightening treatment, or a new hair color.
  6. Waiting to wash it: Once you wash your newly styled hair, it will completely change unless you restyle it afterwards. Prolonging the time between when you wash your hair after having it styled can help the new look last longer. Washing your hair too often is also not good for your hair since it removes its natural oils and oftentimes styling it involves heated tools which can cause damage over time.
  7. Avoid touching the hair: When you touch your hair you can transfer oils from your skin to the hair which contributes to it becoming greasy and needing to be washed sooner. The goal is to avoid washing the hair for as long as possible since once it is washed the style will be undone.
  8. Dry shampoo: Dry shampoo helps to leave hair fresh by absorbing oil buildup without washing out the appearance from when you styled it. This can help to extend your styled hair look longer so that you can get the most out of it.
  9. Blotting paper: Natural oils tend to accumulate over time at the roots when you don’t wash your hair. Using blotting paper to absorb the oil at your roots will keep your hair fresher for longer so that you can prolong your hair style.
