With any routine, consistency is key to success. Before you remain consistent with your routine to see results, you have to find the routine that works for you and your hair! You can’t just copy someone else’s hair care routine and automatically expect it to work perfectly for you. First, you need to determine your hair type and think about your hair goals. For example, you may have thinning hair that needs more volume. Your hair may also be shorter and a bit oily. It’s imperative to determine what your hair needs are. Once you have done this and established your wishes for your hair, you’ll want to look for products that can help you accomplish them.

Consistency is as equally as important as your product lineup. If you use different products every time you shower, or you constantly break your hair care routine, how can you expect them to work properly? Give your routine at least three months to start seeing results. Of course, if you are experiencing any allergic reactions or negative side effects, you should stop immediately. But if you are using a new product and expect to see instant results, perhaps you are inpatient or you’re setting unrealistic expectations. Many products take a bit of time to start working in your hair. In general, you should be using a shampoo, conditioner, and a heat protectant or serum if you use hot styling tools. Look for high-quality products that will give you the best results.

Look at how often you shampoo and condition your hair. Many people wash their hair every day but they probably don’t need to! Unless you have very oily hair or work at a job that gets your hair very dirty every day, you probably don’t need to wash it as often. When you wash your hair too often, you rid your scalp and hair of its natural oils which can lead to dryness, overproduction of oil, dandruff, and other hair problems. Try to set a fairly consistent hair washing routine. For instance, maybe your hair is very thick and only needs to be washed two times per week. Try making Mondays and Thursdays your hair washing days to keep things easy. If you find you need to add in a day, you can always change up your routine at any time!

Don’t forget to get consistent haircuts. Giving your hair a trim can keep your hair healthy. If your ends are all dead, it can contribute to overall deteriorating hair health and your hair may even stop growing. You should aim to see your hair stylist or give yourself a cut at home every six weeks or so.

When you think of consistency in your hair care routine, you should also think about your diet and your body’s health. A poor diet, a lack of exercise and sleep, dehydration, and extreme stress can cause hair problems. This is especially important if your hair issues are caused by vitamin deficiencies or stress. It can take time to change your routine, especially if you have been eating poorly or feeling very stressed for most of your life. Think about all of the benefits you will see by changing up your lifestyle to a healthier one. Your hair will reap the benefits for sure, but you may also notice other benefits including weight loss, feeling healthier, getting sick less often, and more.

Of course, this article is all about consistency but life changes and sometimes your routine needs to change. Perhaps you just had a baby and you are now experiencing a different texture in your hair and hair loss. This means you may need to switch up your hair care products and your routine. That is okay! Do what works for you in every stage of your life.
